Yes, in a world where the best in the world is often the worst in the world, Neiman Marcus is actually pretty good for the last 100 years.
For many years, the story of Neiman Marcus was that its founder, H.L. Mencken, was a stinking, middle-class, philistine who thought that “all the money in the world couldn’t buy a better suit.” After all, he was a famous New York City journalist and wrote about the upper crust and the rich upper crust.
But no matter how hard Mencken tried, he couldn’t keep up with the times.
Neiman was actually the first department store to really make a mark on the consumer revolution, introducing the “New Look” in the 1970s. So after the advent of the “New Look”, the company was able to keep its reputation intact, but the company’s image was tarnished, and it became known around town as the “Neiman Marcus of the Seventies.
As it turns out, some of this “New Look”-era Neiman Marcus brand merchandise is pretty gross. The “New Look” was a time when the department store was full of the “new money” (aka the bourgeoisie) seeking to “make a name for themselves” in the new economy. If you’re one of the “new money” then you might be able to spend less money.
The Neiman Marcus “New Look” logo was originally created by the company as a tribute to one of the great American retail icons of the time, Sam Neiman. So it makes sense that the company would want to honor him by updating his name as well.
So you can bet I’m going to buy a Neiman Marcus t-shirt and a Neiman Marcus business card in order to get away from this “New Look” brand.
In all fairness, there are plenty of other brands out there that have updated their branding to honor some great American brands that I would gladly buy. But Neiman is a brand I’ve had my eyes on for a long time. I’ve even talked about it with my wife. And let’s be real. If you’re a fan of Neiman, you’re probably the type I’m talking about.
Neiman Marcus is the company’s fourth brand to be redesigned in the last five years. The new-look is the result of the company’s ongoing efforts to stay relevant in an increasingly digital world. And it’s not just the new Neiman Marcus. Neiman is the most valuable luxury brand on the planet, with a value of $36 billion. There’s no way you don’t have a piece of that in your pocket.
Neiman is a name that is synonymous with luxury. From the moment you walk into a Neiman Marcus store, you’re instantly aware of that, even if you aren’t a Neiman. The brand’s flagship store in New York City has a retractable roof that changes color in the summer so you can see the street below.
