14 Scene Hacks Only the Pros Know

Scene

In my book, the “12 Scene Hacks” are a list of secrets to improve your photography and videography. I’m always surprised by the number of photographers that aren’t aware of the hacks I reveal, and I’m sure many are reading this post right now. So without further ado, here are the top 14 things that every photographer and videographer should know about themselves.

1. Use a tripod.

Well, more importantly, if you have a tripod (or an SLR with a decent camera bracket) you are almost guaranteed to get the best image out of it. And that includes getting a shot of your subject at the same exact moment as the action.

A tripod is critical if you want to avoid having to change lenses.

When you don't have a tripod, you will inevitably have to change lenses. I prefer to use a wide-angle lens first and then a telephoto after that. Because I know that I always need to keep both lenses on me, I don't like to switch lenses unless I'm shooting something that will affect the quality of the image.

The best way to avoid having to change lenses is to use your zoom settings as a reference.

If you are zoomed in on a subject, zoom out in the same amount to avoid moving it.

When shooting a wide-angle, you need to zoom in the same amount as your subject is far away, while you zoom out to get the zoom effect. This is essential.

One more thing you should know about wide-angle lenses: The only way that your subject is far enough away to have a wide-angle lens is if you have your subject in a mirror.
