As a marketer, I can honestly tell you I am addicted to time. So add it to the list of things you’re addicted to. We’ve all been there. You don’t have the time to wait for your appointment or to do some other task you’ve set out to accomplish. So here are 8 ways marketers are making you addicted to time.
1. Time is the most valuable commodity you have. Marketers are constantly telling you you have too much time and you need to spend it on whatever you want. You’re always on the brink of losing it and this is why.
The problem with time is that it’s not like money.
Time is like gold. Its money is like a piece of paper. It’s fungible and can be exchanged for any other commodity. It’s very hard to get rid of. But you can’t just throw it away because you’ve spent it on something else.
So why, then, are marketers telling you you are addicted to time? Because the only thing that makes you feel good about your life is time. Every other thing is just a crutch (like a smartphone) that keeps you stuck. When you’re tempted to spend it on something you want, you’re not only stealing from your future, you’re also stealing from the present. This is why marketers are so keen on telling you you are addicted to time.
You’ve heard of the “buy now, pay later” adage, right?
The idea is that if you buy something now, you’ll get it when you’re ready to pay later. This is actually a great idea, actually. But it’s not something marketers have thought through very well, and marketers are now using the buy now, pay later adage to sell their goods and services.
Marketers are now selling their goods and services using the buy now, pay later adage. They’ve become addicted to using this tactic. In fact, they’ve gone so far as to suggest that the buy now, pay later adage is as addictive for them as a drug is for a junkie.
The buy now, pay later adage is very much like the addiction I described above.
It’s not that people are addicted to it. It’s that people are addicted to being able to buy things they want. Whether that be junk food, gasoline, or cars, the buying mindset is almost as addictive as the drug.
The buy now, pay later adage is a lot like the drug. There’s a moment of “need” where you “need” what you just bought, but then you just can’t let go of the craving. You can’t stop yourself from buying the next item in the aisle, or from eating that burger. Even the people who’ve never been addicted to drugs can get addicted to the buy now, pay later adage.
The same sort of impulse/buy now, pay later attitude that can drive people to eat junk food or drive across the country for a fix can also be the driving force behind the buying behaviors that cause people to fall in love with the latest and greatest iPhone, or the latest and greatest iPad.
The best example of this is the iPhone 6.
The iPhone 6 is the Apple device that is most closely tied to the buy now, pay later mentality. The iPhone 6 is the most expensive Apple device by a long shot, and as a result, the iPhone 6 has become a very influential and popular product. If you’re someone who feels that you’re “missing out” on the latest and greatest iPhone, or the latest and greatest iPad, Apple’s iPhone 6 is a must-buy.
